My 3-years old daughter is constipated

foods rich in fibre
My daughter has been suffering with constipation since she was 1 year old. She is now 3 years old and she is still constipated. When she hears nature’s call, and she wants to answer, desperately, her body won’t respond. Her stool is very hard and I can see her pain. We almost tried everything, like fibre diet, exercise, other home remedies etc. We also searched online and we found out that there are many kids who are having the same problem. Some pediatrician and mother say that they might be allergic to cow’s milk and others are lactose intolerant. But in my daughter’s case, we cannot cut her milk intake because our problem with her is, she can only consumes very little amount of fruits and vegetables. She doesn’t like it much. Every mother knows that milk is the only substitute to other food which contains complete nutrients that her body needs. Moreover, toddlers still need more protein which can also get from milk.

According to her pediatrician, besides continuing to take lots of fluid and fibre to her diet, his advice is to put or mix Lactulose into milk. We followed his advice, then after 2 weeks, my daughter responds to the medication and she can go well now. We will just wait for few more weeks until her body could finally makes an adjustment. Then, we will reduce the dosage little by little.

Well, we all know that the most common reason why you’re suffering with constipation is because the body is lacking in dietary fiber or water. Another common cause is ignoring the “call to stool” or being too busy to go. It may also be due to lack of exercise or using laxatives too often or in some cases because of certain health conditions.

The best way to become regular again is simply to eat more fibre – about 20-35 grams a day. Fibre absorbs water and makes stools softer and bulkier, which speeds the digestion. To cope with all that fibre the body needs more fluid, too. And don’t forget about exercise, which can also help to keep things moving. Do all three things and everything will begin to work smoothly once more.

Lactulose are great in softening stool. You can also mix a pinch of sugar into her water. Try it if it works with your kid.
